2012 La Montagne Sauvage-CM Ranch-Carmel Valley
This wine is a field blend of Syrah 85%, Grenache Noir 10% and Mourvedre 5% from our CM Ranch vineyard. Located at 1800 feet in the mountains of upper Carmel Valley this vineyard has rocky soils with very warm days and very cool nights. The varieties are picked together and cofermented in 1.5 ton open top tanks. Extraction is very gentle using no more than 1 punch down per day as this site tends to have massive tannins. For the same reason the must is often pressed before dryness then aged in 90% neutral oak barrels for 20 to 24 months. The wine is racked twice and fined lightly before bottling.
Wine Tasting Notes
Wild sage, rosemary, cedar incense, blackberry, sun dried tomato and minty aromas preface this rich but not heavy wine. Densely layered, this blend of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre reveals flavors of plum jam, smoked meat with orange peel and tarragon, along with blueberry jam. A very complex and deeply flavorful wine that satisfies on every level. 245 cases produced.
La Montagne Sauvage-CM Ranch-Carmel Valley Wine Information
This is a proprietary named Rhone style blend based primarily on Syrah with varying additions of Grenache and Mourvedre. It is grown at 1500 feet in the mountains of Carmel Valley on our home ranch. Formerly labeled as Syrah, we changed the name to acknowledge the fact that it has always been a blend of grape varieties. They are harvested and fermented together to enhance the balance and complexity of this long lived wine.
